"You Were Never Here" is the first of a series of novels about "citizen soldiers" and when completed, will include stories of five, non-professional soldiers spanning four generations of the author's ancestors who served honorably in the U.S. Army. These fictional stories are based on historical events spanning the Civil War, the last of the "Indian Campaigns" (the subject of the current book), jumping to America's late involvement in the "war to end all wars" WWI, and ends with a few campaigns of WWII in the Pacific. This novel begins with the author, David Rogers, discovering a small suitcase upon his mother's death which contains historic photographs, military records, and Veterans Administration documents of his great grandfather, Sergeant (Brevet First Lieutenant) David A. Howcroft, U.S. Army, 4th Artillery Regiment. This discovery leads the author on three years of research and compels him to write this novel about his great grandfather, an honorably discharged veteran of the last U.S. Army campaigns against the resistant Chiricahua Apache lead by Geronimo and Lozen (Victorio's younger sister) in the Southwest during the mid-1880's. In the novel, Sergeant Howcroft encounters Lolotea, a fictional female character who is modeled after the historic woman warrior, Lozen. Lolotea is a double agent for the Chiricahua Apache while acting as an interpreter and scout for the U.S. Army. This historical, military fiction documents and embellishes actual battles, describes weapons and tactics of the military and Apache warriors. Sergeant Howcroft and Lolotea become entangled in a tragic love story, caught in the conflicting web of Native Americans protecting their families, property and customs against the "noble" directive of a young nation, "Manifest Destiny". This historic, military fiction documents and embellishes actual battles, describes weapons and tactics of the U.S. military and Native Americans and gives the reader a flavor of the era of the 1880's in Arizona, New Mexico and across the border. An international incident results from a border conflict when Sergeant Howcroft protects Chiricahua non-combatants being pursued by a Mexican Lancer Regiment.
